Design Approach

An inspired design has distinctive character, meaning and integrity. When we experience a well designed building, everything seems to click. Nothing is arbitrary; all parts relate to one another and to the surrounding site. It’s as though it was meant to always be that way. This kind of design doesn’t happen by accident. A successful design solution grows out of an understanding of the Owner’s needs, the unique site characteristics, and a creative, imaginative concept. Clear communication between the Owner and all members of the design team is essential for this to happen.

The design process is a dynamic mix of brain storming sessions, testing solutions through many drawings and sketches, sharing examples, collecting material samples, building scale models, and all the while documenting decisions as we move towards the final solution. It begins with very loose, bold sketches of site concepts and proceeds in ever greater detail, gradually fleshing out details, until everyone is confident and excited about the design.

Qualities we strive for in all design projects, regardless of size or budget: A strong, clear concept; simple forms and details; comfortable scale and proportion; use of sustainable materials; a harmonious pallet of finishes; and honest use of materials. To assure that our careful design work is communicated accurately, we take great care in the preparation of the construction drawings, documenting extensively the many parts and details that comprise a unique building project.
